New Challenge

I had a blast with the new Colored Pencil Magazine monthly challenge.
8x8" on 9x12" sheet.
Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils on Strathmore toned tan paper.

A big thank you to Sally Ford for sharing her photo.

This month's challenge was a lot of fun. Thank you for such a cute photo.
I didn't have much time, so I knew I had to do some major cropping. But I didn't want to loose the adorable bunny. So I rearranged things around a little.
It's the first time that I worked on the Strathmore toned tan paper. I usually like to use Stonehenge paper with my pencils, which is much thicker, and has a little more tooth. So I was a bit worried. But I must say I was happily surprised to find out that the Strathmore paper was able to hold quite a few layers, and feels pretty sturdy. The erasing was very easy too.
I shall use it again!

New Challenge

And now,  more fun.

I started working on the January Colored Pencil Magazine Challenge a while ago. It's a portrait this time. I decided to take my time, and do the best I can. It was just a bit intimidating!

I used Prismacolor and Lyra pencils on Stonehenge Kraft paper, 9x12"
I also used some mineral spirit for the black because it didn't stand out on the Kraft colored paper as I had hoped.

What a challenge! I had to pry the pencils out of my hands and force myself to stop so I wouldn't ruin everything. I added so many layers that the paper doesn't have a tooth left, it's smooth as a baby's botton, and probably twice as heavy as the original paper weight!

A big thank you to Sally Ford for sharing her beautiful photo.

You can see a few more work in progress images here.

Tiger and peacock

I finally took the time to work on a couple of drawings I'd been wanting to do for a while. It was very enjoyable to just draw for fun. I hadn't done an ACEO in quite a while, it felt strange to work on such a small format again, but quite satisfying to get the immediate gratification of a piece finished faster then the larger ones. I have to do more.

Colored Pencil Magazine Monthly Challenges

Here are a couple more projects I've been working on. Last month, once the holiday madness was finally over, I decided to enter the Colored Pencil Magazine challenge. Each month they share a photo that anyone can draw to enter their competition. The only rule is that it needs to be done mostly with colored pencils. It was very challenging, but a lot of fun, and most of all, a great way to improve my skills. So I decided to enter every month, if I can. Here are my first two entries, they both are 5x7".

A big thank you to photographer Sally Ford for sharing her beautiful photos.

Between commissions

Christmas is right around the corner, and with it comes the custom portraits rush. I've already started working on a few, but I won't post them here or anywhere until after the Holidays. I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone.

In between commissions, I'm hoping to be able to draw and paint a little too so I don't leave this page completely blank.
Here are a couple I finished lately:

Cheetah 3 - 5x7" - Colored Pencils

Cat and Crow 21 - 8x10" - Colored Pencils

Summer Group Show

Semi-annual show in Wells

It's this time of year again, when all the artists in town get together for an art show. I always make a point of showing something different each time. Whether it's the medium or the subject, I try to be creative. This time, I wanted to paint an old landmark that unfortunately isn't anymore. I loved driving by it when I first moved here. But the motel the sign was on was sold, and the owners took the sign with them.
Since it's tourist season again, I hope the regulars will appreciate this little throwback.

I didn't have time to take a better picture before the painting was due. So here's one to give you an idea, until the show is over, and I can take a better one.

ACEO Challenge

ACEO #24-30

I'm finally done with this challenge. I'm glad it's over. While it's great to challenge oneself, I think that once more it killed my creativity. I enjoyed it for the first ten days or so. It was fun. But it quickly became a chore. Not so much the drawing or painting part, but the scanning, listing, and posting on blogs, and Facebook page. I was good with posting an update everyday on Facebook. I had to because a couple of artist friends did the challenge with me, so I had to post their work too. And I'm glad of it because it pushed me to be consistent. However, you might have noticed that it was not the case here. I just took the time today to catch up, and added the second half of the month's worth of ACEOs, hehe!
So if I ever challenge myself again, I'll make it shorter. I think 10 days is great to get me going. I might not even announce it, and just do my own thing. That way I won't have the pressure of having to give news everyday. And it will end while it's still fun for me.

So here's my last little series of this challenge. It reminded me of the Pacific Northwest. The seacoast I like so much.
